If you are getting ready to sell your home and want to get the most out of it, renovations are something you need to seriously consider.

How long have you lived in your home? A few years? 10 years? 15 years? For homeowners who have lived in their homes for a while, it can be hard to see how dated your home has become.

However, if your home has good bones a few updates might be enough to bring your home into the present. Renovating around the house isn’t as difficult as you might think.

Because of how important the bathroom is when considering home value and its small size compared to other rooms such as the kitchen makes it a great place to start. And it doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg.

So let’s talk about how you can make your bathroom look new on a budget and with minimal effort.

Renovating Your Bathroom on a Budget

When renovating your home your bathroom is a great place to begin making changes. If your home is in relatively good condition it can be rather simple to update it. Most projects can even be done by yourself.

Replace Hardware:

The first and easiest of the updates is replacing hardware. Remember before you go out buying things, you need to make sure to pick a color and stick to it. Or else the hardware will clash and look messy.

You don’t necessarily need to keep the hardware consistent throughout the entire house, however, it does feel a lot more together when you use hardware, light fixtures, and faucets with the same finish.

Once you have decided, you need to find pieces with the same finish and style to update the bathroom. Think about replacing your towel rod with an elegant towel ring. Replace your old toilet paper holder with a new pivoting toilet paper holder.

Look at getting new handles for your cabinets or a new door handle. Little changes like these can do more towards updating your bathroom than you might think.

You might need to patch some holes with spackle and sandpaper. Just remember to use touchup paint over the spackle.

Light Fixtures:

If you decide to update your light fixtures, make sure you get a professional to handle all the wiring. Or make sure you know what you’re doing.

Picking out a new light fixture that matches the finish and style that you are going for is important. Just remember, if you want to make your bathroom look new on a budget you cannot forget about the lighting.

Update Cabinets:

Your cabinets are one of the best ways that you can update your bathroom. Giving them a fresh coat of paint will make all the difference when you finally sell.

The good news about painting your cabinets is that nowadays it is rather easy to do on your own. There have been some major innovations in how paint is made and what it can do. Now there are many different types and brands of paint that require very little prep to use.

There are even some that require no sanding or priming at all. You just simply need to apply the paint to a clean surface and the paint will adhere rather quickly. There are a few different materials you will need when you go to paint, but don’t worry. Almost everything can be purchased rather inexpensively.

If you would like, we have a cabinet painting DIY guide with all the different materials as well as types of paint you can use when painting your cabinets yourself.

New Mirrors:

Changing out your old mirrors (or medicine cabinet) might be worth looking into as well when updating your bathroom. It really depends on how the mirrors have held up as well as what your budget will allow.

If you have a medicine cabinet and the mirrors are in relatively good condition then you might simply consider painting the trim around the mirror to match whatever color you decided to paint the cabinets.

If the mirror is begging to look a little worse for wear then you might consider simply replacing it.

The Walls:

As a general rule of thumb, whenever you decide to sell your home, you should always paint the walls in just about every room of the house. Sure you can clean around the house and wipe down the walls and baseboards. But painting provides the more clean and fresh look that buyers want.

Not to mention that once you paint your cabinets, you should consider using a different color on the walls. For example: if your bathroom has a more natural color palette with wood grain cabinets and a warm beige colored paint on the walls, you might want to consider painting the cabinets a dark grey or dark blue and the walls a very light grey.

Make sure that you always keep what look you are going for in mind whenever you pick out any colors.

These few changes can be completed in a rather short amount of time and will make your bathroom look like new again without breaking the bank!
